A thick fruit spread made with fruit pieces and sugar that are cooked and reduced until thickened into a medium textured spread. The cooking process concentrates the flavor and changes the fruit pieces (chopped or pureed) into smaller, softer bits that spread easily onto bread and toast. Jam is also a popular spread and filling for desserts such as cakes and pastries.
