A description of a food that has been preserved and packaged in a manner that allows the food to be stored for an extended period of time without having to be refrigerated. The preservation and packaging assists to keep bacteria from growing in the food. The food may be ready to eat when opened or it may need liquid added to rehydrate. Some products require heating.
