A type of basil that has two varieties, red and green. The green variety has reddish-purple stems and reddish-purple veins running through its green leaves. Its flavor is spicy and aromatic. The red variety has dark green leaves that have a tint of reddish-purple. It has a sweet basil flavor which makes it very suitable for sweet dishes. Basil can be dried and used during months when it may not be available in some regions, but it is best when used fresh as it will provide peak flavor.
