A slightly sweet, round nut grown on shrubs and trees in North America, Europe, and Asia. Hazelnuts are covered with a papery skin that is somewhat bitter tasting. To remove the skin, slightly roast the nuts and while warm, use a towel to manually remove the papery skin. A hazelnut is also known as a filbert.
