Refers to a variety of dishes that are usually bite-sized foods served before a main meal and are often served with cocktails. An hors d'oeuvre may consist of simple foods such as sliced cheese, sliced raw vegetables, crackers with chutney, or more elaborate preparations such as canapes, broiled shrimp, and various types of dips.
