A variety of plants having fruit that look similar to some varieties of squash, but unlike squash, the flesh is inedible. Gourds come in various colors and shapes and they are prized for their very tough shells. When the inner flesh is removed from the gourd, the shell is dried and used as a container or as a decoration.
