Streusel

A sweet, crumbly topping used on breads, cakes, muffins, sweetbreads, coffeecakes, and some pastry items. A Streusel topping is typically made with butter, sugar or brown sugar, flour, and spices, such as cinnamon or cocoa. At times it may also include chopped nuts such as almonds, pecans or walnuts. Originating from the German word ströusel meaning "strewn", the Streusel topping is lightly sprinkled over the top surface of the food being prepared prior to baking. After it has baked, the Streusel topping turns into a crispy-textured, light colored coating that enhances the flavor and appearance of the sweet foods on which it is placed.
