Glossary of Wine Terms

Earthy Glossary Term
Descriptor of aroma and/or flavor of wine reminiscent of earth. A hint of earthiness can be appealing, too much can make a wine coarse.
Easy Glossary Term
Descriptor of a pleasant wine that simply tastes good. A synonym for “direct” or “simple”.
Ebulliometer Glossary Term
A common tool used to determine alcohol content by volume by measuring differences in boiling points between water and alcohol.
Edel Traube Glossary Term
A grape varietal, most notably known as Gewürztraminer, used in the production of white wine.
Effervescence Glossary Term
The presence of natural or added carbon dioxide in wine that is noted either by visual examination or by tasting.
Eiswein Glossary Term
German term for Icewine. White wine produced from grapes that are kept on the vine until the first deep frost.
Elegant Glossary Term
Descriptor of wine with distinguished quality, it is balanced, graceful, and refined.
Elevage Glossary Term
French term for maturing processes entailed between the fermentation and bottling of wine.

Descriptor of wine lacking in flavor.

A process of adding sugar to the must (unfermented wine), resulting in a wine with high alcohol content.

A grape varietal most notably known as Marsanne, used in the production of white wine, originating in the Rhône region of France.
Espagne Glossary Term
A grape varietal most notably known as Cinsault, used in the production of light red wines, originating in the Rhône region of France.
Esparte Glossary Term
A grape varietal most notably known as Mourvedre, used in the production of red wine, originating in the Catalonia region of Spain.
Essence Glossary Term
1) Odor kits that contain vials of representative flavor essence of wine. Or (2) A term used, at times, by wineries to describe a late harvest, sweet, red wine.
Estate Bottled Glossary Term
A wine label term indicating a wine is made from 100% from grapes grown in one particular winery or in vineyards one particular winery leases long term.
Ethereal Glossary Term
Descriptor of wine with extremely unpleasant strong aroma of paint solvents.
Ethyl Acetate Glossary Term
An ester byproduct of wine fermentation and/or the aging of wine. Esters’ are compounds that are produced when acid and alcohol are combined.
Ethyl Alcohol Glossary Term
A type of alcohol found in alcoholic drinks. Refer to "Ethyl Acetate".
Evanescent Glossary Term
Descriptor of wine with minute intensity and persistence on the nose and/or palate.
Extra Dry Glossary Term
Term used on a wine label indicating a sparkling wine or champagne is not-quite dry.

The extraction of compounds from the skin of grapes. These compounds impart tannin, color, and body into a wine.
